One of the more bizarre aspects of the BDSM scene is just how many acronyms there are.
I think overall my favorite is WIITWD - what it is that we do. It's the most inclusive, embracing kinks of all types.
- B&D
- Bondage & discipline is often considered a "lighter" version of BDSM, with an emphasis on bondage, and the discipline rarely going beyond some hand-spanking.
- D/s
- Domination & submission is not about the specific activities engaged in, rather it refers to the psychology of the participants who achieve altered states of mind referred to as "topspace" and "subspace" respectively.
- SM
- Sadomasochism
- BDSM
- BDSM is the term used to generically refer to all three of the above, B&D, D/s and SM.
- SSC
- Safe, Sane and Consensual is a slogan coined in the 80s to express how the activities engaged in by BDSMers differed from those engaged in my sociopaths. Safety and sanity are relative terms and must be decided by the individual participants who judge based on the risk:benefit ratio of the desired activity; being informed is a necessary precondition to consensuality.
- ASB
- A Usenet group called alt.sex.bondage was the earliest gathering of perverts on the Internet, prior to the existence of the web.
- SSBB
- Once ASB was completely overrun with spam, soc-subculture.bondage-bdsm was chartered to replace it.
- YKIOK
- Your Kink Is OK was a phrase coined on ASB originally, to express the basic notion that those who live in glass fetishes shouldn't throw stones.
- YKIOKIJNMK
- Your Kink Is OK It's Just Not My Kink was also coined on ASB, to express that the individual didn't wish to engage in a particular activity, but was not knocking anyone else choosing differently.
- WIITWD
- What It Is That We Do was coined on ASB also to be a more inclusive term than BDSM. For instance, WIITWD includes crossdressers who are not into BDSM, but often attend fetish gatherings and are "one of us" even if they don't play with ropes and chains or power exchange.
- LMNOP
- LMNOP is a term inclusive in the same sense as WIITWD, but in a tongue-in-cheek sense, the community mocking itself for the navel-gazing invovled in defining everything.
- TPE
- Total Power Exchange was a term coined on SSBB during discussions about those who live 24/7 rather than engaging in time-limited scenes; it expresses the basic idea that choosing to submit is the last choice a submissive makes.
