Melting Point, by Pat Califia*, is a collection of lesbian short stories. The stories are definitely pornographic, the entire point is whack-off material for leatherdykes. However, they are not typically pornographic in the sense that there is enough back story to make you interested in the characters.
However, the main reason I am a fan of the author's fiction is that any description, whether explicitly sexual or not, is utterly sensual. A simple description of someone walking across the floor is arousing. The actual sex scenes are explosively hot. I've often said if these stories don't get you hot, check your pulse, cause you may be dead. And I'm not entirely certain being dead would stop you from getting hot over these stories!
The first story, "Big Girls", introduces us to a fictional bar called Jax that is used in other stories as well. It is a story about a large, butch bottom submitting to a petite femme top and includes a hot scene incorporating bondage, breath control, electrical play and heavy corporal. It also has my favorite quote from the book: Oh, it was wicked, wicked, Reid thought, wanting to do this to somebody else. The temptation to take more than Kat would willingly give beat in her cunt like a hard-on that wouldn't go away. Sometimes Reid found that fighting that temptation was more of a challenge than getting the bottom to have a good time. The restraint she had to place on her own sadism had to be stronger than any chain that locked somebody else to her bed. The second story, "Daddy", is about role playing and includes two scenarios, one being a Daddy/girl story and the second involving a top forcing a submissive to submit specifically to her as a a Daddy. Next is a sci-fi story called "Fix Me Up," about a sadistic lesbian and her male trick/drug provider. My favorite story is the second sci-fi story, "The Bounty Hunter," which takes place on another planet where humans foolishly went to colonize, only to be enslaved by the intelligent race inhabiting that planet. The story isn't really BDSM, more like "rough sex", with a huge degree of empathy between the protagonist and her human slave. In "What Girls Are Made Of," a baby butch goes to a peep show in a sleazy adult club and the three femme strippers take her in hand and dom the heck out of her between dances, with many adventures including humiliation, pissing, fisting and with the final scenes occurring back at Jax. The author ends the book with an essay, "Slipping," which includes a bunch of thoughts and experiences about safe sex, and those times when one settles for something less than the *safest* sex. As always, Califia's essays about real, honest lesbian sexuality are thought-provoking and mindful. I highly recommend this book; I've read it several times and just recently reread it. The imagery stays with me for days and weeks, providing any number of orgasms once the reading is done. *The author formerly known as Pat Califia is now Patrick Califia-Rice, a FTM transgendered man whose journey is summarized on Wikipedia. I have always connected to the author's work from the perspective of a leatherdyke. I simply cannot wrap my mind around the idea that a man wrote them and find myself uncomfortable using male pronouns in reviews of these writings. I also feel that it would be both inappropriate and offensive to refer to the author by female pronouns. I've postponed writing reviews of the author's works, although they are some of the best and most profound writings within the BDSM community, over my discomfort with figuring out how to address this issue; however, these writings are important enough to me personally, and my own journey, that I really wish to discuss them, thus I compromised by avoiding using pronouns entirely in reviews of the author's works.
