She lay across the back of the horse, completely blind to the direction they rode. Terrified at first, her heart rate slowed down after a while, though panicked questions ran through her mind. What did they want from her?

While a virgin, she wasn't naive, she knew what men wanted from women. The question was, was that all they wanted? Would they rape her and discard her, perhaps killing her to prevent her testifying against them? Or would they want a woman for the rest of what men wanted: for cooking, cleaning, mending and chores? She determined to make herself as useful as she could, in hopes of prolonging her life.

At first, her mind refused to consider her potential rape, just focusing on the ways she could be useful to them beyond that, but after a couple hours, she finally faced her feelings about that.

Well, it couldn't be too terrible, after all women have been doing it for years. The mares, sows and cows didn't seem to mind. The hens put up a lot of fuss, but the roosters got them eventually, and they didn't seem any the worse for wear.

While the idea made her heart race with fear, she knew practically it couldn't be that big of a deal. She had been engaged once, but William had joined the army and she hadn't heard from him for some time. He was a gentle man who had always treated her with kindness and respect, so she hadn't expected to be traumatized by their wedding night.

It was a lot harder to imagine what these guys might be like. The one who had approached her didn't seem too bad, he wasn't very clean, but he seemed personable. If he were cleaned up and met under circumstances other than him participating in a kidnapping, she might have even found him attractive.

The second man was withdrawn and seemed to have a lot of anger just beneath the surface. She found him utterly terrifying.

The third man was little more than a boy, and she understood he would be nasty and cruel, largely to impress the older men.

Which of them was in front of her now?

As she considered this, her heart rate increased again. Being upside down, dizzy, disoriented, and terrified by her own thoughts, she found herself gagging. She tried desperately to contain her lunch, but in her struggle, she lost control of her bladder.

As she felt the warm liquid stream down her leg, she was overwhelmed with shame and the color rose in her face.

Her mind continued racing, obsessed with thoughts about her predicament and whether she would survive and how horrible the rape might be.

They rode for hours, and the emotional turmoil her thoughts induced left her spent and exhausted by the time they stopped to make camp.

The man before her dismounted from the horse and lifted her off. He removed the sack from her head and she realized it was the third man, the near-boy, who she'd ridden with. He put her on the ground, but left her arms tied behind her, then walked off.

As her eyes adjusted, she realized she was in complexly unfamiliar territory. The sun in the sky indicated it was an hour or two before sunset.

To her dismay, the men began making camp without her, not providing her any opportunity to prove her usefulness. Determined to prolong her life, she called out an offer to be of assistance. The first man walked over, backhanded her across the mouth and told her to stay still and shut up.

As she tasted the blood in her mouth, she felt despair. This was the guy she had pegged as nicest, the most likely to be sympathetic towards her.

She realized that no matter how bad the rape was, it wasn't the real horror - she was going to die.

She began to sob, realizing that no one - not even her father or William - would ever know what had happened to her.
