I posted a video clip of Betty Dodson drawing recently, and it reminded me to go ahead and review her book, Sex For One.
The full title is Sex for One - The Joy of Selfloving and it's a book aimed at women who are perhaps a bit uncomfortable with their bodies.
This is much more of a "why to" book than a "how to" book. It is not only useful for those who are perhaps a bit squeamish about masturbating, but also for those who are interested in the historic aspects of women learning to celebrate their sexuality. Before Annie Sprinkle, before Susie Bright, before Nancy Friday and Pat Califia, back when feminism was in it's infancy, Betty was a nice lady proselytizing that women should enjoy their sexuality, that pleasure was our right and should be celebrated. Betty led workshops for quite some time actually teaching women in person to masturbate. She is probably responsible for more female orgasms than anyone on the planet, and you can't help but admire that. The book is not crude, but tasteful, almost gentle and sweet. Think... Donna Reed teaching masturbation; that's almost what it's like. Betty's approach is frank and straightforward, but also very non-threatening and relaxing. For women more interested in the "how to" rather than the "why to", I highly recommend Betty's videos: Celebrating Orgasm - Women's Private Self-Loving Sessions - a video of five individual women, ages 26 to 62, achieving orgasm in one-on-one sessions with Betty or Selfloving - Portrait of a Woman's Sexuality Seminar - a video of one of Betty's famous BodySex worshops with 10 women ages 28 to 60 participating. And guys, if you want to REALLY learn "pussy worship," besides the videos above, get and study Viva La Vulva: Women's Sex Organs Revealed - a gorgeous and accurate view of female anatomy and Orgasmic Women: 13 Selfloving Divas to see 13 women who each masturbate somewhat differently.
